Our Core Service

Cask Management

Owning a whisky cask is only the beginning. Without professional management, quality deteriorates, value erodes, and your exit options narrow. We actively manage your cask from the moment it arrives — so when it's time to exit, you're in the strongest possible position.

What It Means

More than storage — active stewardship of a physical asset

Most cask owners pay warehouse fees and hope for the best. They have no independent verification, no quality data, and no one checking whether the cask is even where it's supposed to be. Cask management changes that. It means your investment is physically verified, independently measured, and documented at every stage — with expert advice on how to protect and improve quality over time.

What We Do

Three pillars of cask management

Every cask under our care is subject to ongoing quality management. Here's what that looks like in practice.

02

Barrel Selection for Quality

When a cask isn't performing, we advise on choosing different barrels to attain the quality needed for a strong exit. The right barrel can transform a struggling spirit into something genuinely worth bottling.

  • We assess what the spirit needs and match it to the right barrel
  • Selective barrel matching is how we recover quality
  • The goal is always bottling-standard quality, regardless of where the cask started
  • Advice based on decades of industry experience and tasting data
The solution is always to find the right barrel to bring the spirit up to standard — targeted barrel selection, not shortcuts.
03

Flavour Enrichment

For clients interested in the flavour side of whisky, we can suggest a variety of casks that will enrich unique flavour profiles. This isn't about fixing a problem — it's about elevating quality and creating something distinctive that stands out in the market.

  • Old rum casks — tropical sweetness, vanilla, and dried fruit notes
  • Port pipes — rich berry, plum, and deep red fruit character
  • Sherry butts — dried fruit, nuts, and warm spice complexity
  • Other spirit casks — Cognac, Madeira, Marsala, and more
Cask finishing can significantly increase market appeal and value. We help you choose the right cask for your goals and timeline.
Why It Matters

What happens to a cask nobody manages?

Over 10–25 years of maturation, a cask that is never inspected, tested, or maintained can develop problems that are expensive or impossible to reverse.

ABV Falls Below 40%

If alcohol strength drops below 40% ABV, the spirit can no longer legally be sold as Scotch whisky. Without periodic regauging, this threshold can be crossed without anyone knowing — and it's irreversible.

Evaporation & Leakage

The angel's share is expected at 1.5–2% per year. But a degraded cask can lose spirit far faster. Hoops loosen, staves dry out, seals fail — and years of undetected loss mean far fewer bottles than expected.

Over-Oaking & Missed Peak

Too long in a highly active cask and the whisky becomes excessively woody and bitter. Without tasting checks, the optimal bottling window passes — and the damage cannot be undone.

No Proof of Custody

Many owners pay storage fees on casks with no independent proof that the cask is even where they say it is. No physical checks, no documentation — serious problems discovered only when you try to sell.

What We Actively Do

Ongoing protection for your investment

Every cask under our management benefits from a structured programme of checks, monitoring, and documented reporting.

Scheduled Regauge Checks

Your cask is periodically regauged to independently verify the remaining litres of pure alcohol. You'll always know exactly what's in your cask — no guesswork, no surprises at sale time.

Re-racking When Needed

If quality testing shows a cask isn't meeting standards or the vessel is degrading, we recommend and manage re-racking into a sound, high-quality barrel — preserving your spirit and protecting your exit.

Angel's Share Monitoring

We track evaporation rates against expected benchmarks for your cask type and age. Abnormal loss is flagged early so we can investigate and act before it erodes your investment.

Condition Reporting

Every check produces a documented report — cask condition, photographic evidence, and recommendations. Your investment file is always current and audit-ready for buyers.

Without active management
  • ABV could drop below 40% without anyone knowing
  • Leaks, over-oaking, and structural damage go undetected
  • Problems discovered only when you try to sell or bottle
  • No documented history — buyers walk away
With Cask Exit Partners
  • Scheduled quality checks over the life of your investment
  • Evaporation tracked and benchmarked — anomalies flagged early
  • Re-racking recommended proactively if cask condition deteriorates
  • Full audit trail that builds buyer confidence at sale
